I-275 Bob Graham
Sunshine Skyway Bridge
Tampa Bay, Florida
Owner: Florida Department of Transportation
Design / Construction Engineering and Inspection Support: FIGG
Since opening to traffic in 1987, the Bob Graham Sunshine Skyway Bridge has been an icon for Florida and one of the most recognized cable-stayed bridges in the United States. It was the first cable-stayed bridge in the U.S. to have a single plane of stays and single pylons. It features a 1,200’ long main span, which was the longest precast concrete segmental cable-stayed span in the Western Hemisphere when it opened. Dual elliptical piers allow for the flexibility needed for the 4,000’ continuous unit and reduce drag in this hurricane prone area.
