A unique collaboration among the owner, designer and contractor, with extensive community input, resulted in this landmark cable-stayed bridge with a 1,160' main span. The world’s tallest public bridge observatory at 420’, atop one pylon, is entered through adjacent Fort Knox, which was built from Maine granite in the mid-1800's. The bridge opened to traffic in December, 2006, just 42 months after the emergency replacement need was identified and has provided a new tourist destination in New England. Twenty awards have been presented to the Maine Department of Transportation for this innovative and efficient crossing, including the International Bridge Conference’s 2007 George S. Richardson medal. Selected as one of the top 25 bridges of all time by Roads and Bridges Magazine.
