In 1979, Hurricane Frederick’s sustained winds of 130 mph destroyed the original bridge to Dauphin Island, leaving Alabama Department of Transportation providing expensive ferry service. Speed was critical in the design and construction of the replacement bridge and in just 34 months time, the new 17,814’ long bridge opened to traffic. The high level portion of the bridge consists of three spans, the main one being 400’; it was the first span of this length on a precast concrete segmental bridge. The design features twin wall I-shaped piers and an integral riding surface. Winner of three design awards, including the 1983 Precast Concrete Institute’s Award of Excellence.
