The San Antonio "Y" bridges (downtown I-10 and
I-35) exemplify the value of precast segmental bridges for building
in restricted urban areas while maintaining traffic flow. The
structures, the first precast segmental concrete elevated
interstate in Texas, were built within the existing right-of-way
over traffic. Three contracts totaling 1.3 million square feet were
built at a cost of $65.4 million, saving the owner 11.6% from the
alternate design.
