Linn Cove Viaduct
Grandfather Mountain, NC

This precast concrete segmental bridge was the first in America to be built from the top down to protect the environment. At 4,400’ above sea level, the S-shaped bridge has 180’ spans and contains every type of alignment geometry used in highway construction, including reverse curvature. This unique bridge blends into the mountain with its gracefulness and through the addition of black iron oxide to the concrete. The bridge has been honored with eleven design awards.
